The Unlikey Duo

DHARNI & K-LEAH

– Dharni, 29 & K-Leah, 22

"We busk because we love what we do."

If there is one word that could sum up Dharni Ng and Katarzyna Olsaz’s (K-Leah) partnership, it would be ‘uncanny’.

Their matchup might seem bizarre initially, with K-Leah a vocalist and Dharni and freestyle beatboxer, but their harmony was evident once they started performing.

Yet as buskers, the duo may come across as elusive to the public. That is because they reside in Poland — as neighbours — and only come back to Singapore every half a year or so.

What differentiates them out the most from other buskers would be the fact that they perform accapella. Dharni, 29,  has the ability to create sound effects with his voice, and has a wide vocal range that could cover for both bass and treble.

K-Leah, 22,  sings along impressively, in perfect tune and beat — and together, they leave the audience in awe at the seamless medley of their vocals.

The duo does covers of popular pop songs, and strives to put new pieces out every time they are out busking.

‘We love showcasing our new covers to the public, because the response we get is most genuine. People don’t stop to watch for the sake of stopping; they stop because they really like it,” K-Leah said.

The duo spends most of their time performing in Poland, but Dharni particularly enjoys showcasing his pieces to the Singaporean public, and even shares that it is “only right to come home to his roots.”

Despite street busking being a hobby for both of them, the duo are still extremely passionate about what they do.

They started out three years ago to check and practice their skills, but now they hope that through their songs, aspiring buskers would find the courage to step out and display their talents.

“Whenever we see the faces of young people light up as they watch our performance, we hope that they’ll remember it for life and inspires them to do something so that they don’t have regrets,” Dharni said.

“Each time someone comes up and tells us that we did a good job we feel appreciated because it serves as an affirmation that what were are doing is a good thing,” K-Leah added.

It is no wonder that Lights by Ellie Goulding is the duo’s favourite piece — that was their inspiration, and now it affectionately resonates with their vision of inspiring young talents.

When they are in Singapore, Dharni and K-Leah perform along Orchard road on weekend evenings.
